 ARTIST OF THE MONTH DEB HERRICK

Deborah Herrick got her interest in art after walking through a local gallery about 10 years ago.  I asked the volunteer where I could learn the art of watercolor and was directed to the Legacy Community Art Center.  I spent the next few years exposed to watercolor and pastel painting, accepting criticism and encouragement from many of the local artists.  There were a few years I did not paint, but began  4 years ago and now I create art everyday.  My latest interest is oil painting and I really enjoy it.  I earned my Bachlors of Science degree in Medical Technology from Washburn University in the 90’s and worked in hospital laboratories until I took early retirement in 2006.  I joined the Topeka Art Guild a year and half ago and exhibit and volunteer on a regular basis.  I have received awards in two juried shows.  I also make unique greeting cards and what I call “junk journals”. I use these when I travel to make notes for the days activities, collect receipts and pamphlets that otherwise would be scattered and probably lost!  I have a passionate love of beauty and especially the Kansas landscape.  Open skies and rolling hills dotted with cattle make me feel like I belong here.  I love to drive the backroads looking for inspiration in abandoned places, old barns, architectural oddities and vibrant flowers and grasses. In addition to exhibiting  the Topeka Art Guild, I have had shows at the Classic Bean and contributed to shows at the Mize Studio.
